Graduating M.D. at Edinburgh in 1857, he entered the Indian Medical Service becoming a Brigade Surgeon. He married Rosamund, daughter of Charles Emmanuel Scott, C.E., and Mary Ann Scott.

Dr. Robert's obituary in the Daily Telegraph of the 15th September 1908, slightly abbreviated states - "Brigade Surgeon Lidderdale, M.D. was buried yesterday at Torquay ... served in India for 30 years. He took part in the closing scenes of the Indian Mutiny and saw further action in the Frontier Force in Multan ... he received a medal and clasp. Dr. Lidderdale was a well known entomologist ... in Bhutan a new butterfly of great beauty was called after him. His larger collection was acquired by the British Museum."

Their children were Rosalind Marion, James Hubert, and Lilias Margaret. Rosalind was born in 1881 and James in 1884, both died of diptheria in 1888.

Brigade-Surgeon Robert Lidderdale, M.D., died onSeptember 9th. He joined the Bengal Medical Department as Assitant Surgeon, January 27th, 1858; became Brigade-Surgeon, March 21st, 1885; and retired from service in 1889.
