Born November 10, 1950 and educated at West House School and King Edward's, Birmingham, then Durham University (B.A.) and Edinburgh (LL.B.), admitted Writer to the Signet and appointed lecturer in Scots Law at Edinburgh 1981. Has published extensively on Scots mercantile law. Married in 1976, Helen Jessica Morgan, daughter of Gareth Morgan, a Welshman, now Professor of Greek at University of Texas at Austin. They have two sons, Matthew William, born 1978, Andrew Alexander, born 1980 and a daughter Emily Frances, born in 1987.
