Born December 7, 1946 and educated at West House School and King Edward's, Birmingham, then the University of East Anglia, where he gained a First in History. Served for a time in the V & A Museum, before becoming Lecturer in the History of Art Department at University College, London. Has published on nineteenth century British broadsheets, and a further work on both British and French broadsheets is forthcoming. Married in 1971 a painter, Gillian, daughter of Robert Hatch, writer, of New York. They have a daughter, Saskia Hester, born 1975 and a son, Luke Littlefield, born 1978.
