She was born September 1, 1942 in Henley in Arden, Warwickshire, and after King's Norton Grammar School and Wycombe Abbey took an honours degree in French at Birmingham. She married, 22 Oct 66 Henry William Hawkes, architect, son of William Neville Hawkes and Marjorie Elsie Hawkes (nee Jackson). There are three daughters: Harriet Rebecca (1967), now reading History of Art at University College, London, Polly Tabitha (1969) going up to the University of East Anglia in 86 to read English and Olivia Tamsin (1972). Before marriage Hester was for two years in publishing and now teaches French and Italian part time, at her home in Stratford-upon-Avon.
