Was born September 22, 1879 and married in 1911 Winifred Ann, daughter of Charles Newman Thomas of the Surveyor General's Department of the Cape, who was later appointed Sergeant at Arms in the Cape Town House of Assembly, and was for thirty years organist of St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town.
From 1902-1906 Henry worked in the Law Department of the Cape Civil Service. Then he travelled in Africa until 1917 when he went to the British Embassy in Washington, where he worked on War Work. When this ended in 1920 he was appointed Secretary of the Imperial Institute, London becoming its Acting Director 1924-6.
From then on Christian Science was his principal occupation. He became a Practitioner and in 1942-45 he held the clerkship of the First Church of Christ Scientist, London. During part of the Second World War he was attached to the Foreign Office and at one time again did a spell at the British Embassy, Washington. After the war he and his wife went to live in South Africa, where he died in 1952.
Ann lived to be 95, and on her death in 1977 the South African English press paid tribute to her as a conservator of English culture in the community and as benefactress to the Bertram House Museum, which she endowed with her collection of British furniture.
