Robert was the brother of Thomas and of James who, both in turn, were lairds of the Isle. He chose a scholastic career at Edinburgh, taking the degree A.M. and later is recorded as having been appointed a Regent (professor) of Philosophy. On September 2, 1681, he married Helene, a daughter of James Pillans who was also a Regent of Philosophy. They had two sons, Thomas and James.
