Born March 16, 1862, she was nine years older than her first brother, William Kennedy and in her middle teens faced the difficult task of maintaining her father's household after the breakdown of his marriage. This she managed for some years till her affection for Francis Russel, of whom her father Charles Sillem hotly disapproved, brought about a rupture. A child of the marriage died young and her husband left her shortly after to go to Australia. She lived to be 89 and, from Kent, kept in occasional contact with her elder brother by letter.
